Second IMI Tax Payment Due in August

Second IMI Tax Payment Due in August

If you own property in Portugal and are not exempt from municipal property tax (IMI), it's important to keep track of payment deadlines to avoid fines.

As in previous years, the Portuguese Tax Authority automatically splits IMI payments, depending on the total amount due:

  • One instalment for homeowners who pay IMI under 100 euros.

  • Two instalments for homeowners who pay IMI over 100 euros;

  • Three instalments for homeowners who pay IMI over 500 euros.

In 2024, the deadlines are:

  • May 31: First installment.

  • August 31: Second installment. Only homeowners who pay an annual IMI of more than 500 euros are required to pay a second instalment in August.

  • November 30: Final installment due.

However, regardless of the amount, all taxpayers have the option to pay the full IMI amount in May.

Who must pay IMI Tax?

IMI Tax for 2024 is due from individuals who owned property in Portugal as of December 31, 2023. Even if you've since sold the property, the tax is still owed by the person who was the homeowner on the last day of 2023.
