Who has to file an IRS (Personal Income Tax) statement?
Residents in Portugal who have obtained income that requires them to submit an IRS declaration. The declaration must also include the income of the dependents that the person has in their care or in shared custody.
Persons resident in other countries who have obtained income in Portugal (property income or capital gains) on which they have not yet paid tax and therefore need to declare it in their IRS statement (income that has not been subject to withholding tax).
Deadlines for IRS 2020:
IRS statements in 2020, referring to income obtained in 2019, have to be submitted between April 1st and June 30, 2020, regardless of the taxpayer's income category.
The IRS statement has to be submitted in electronic format.
Submitting IRS statements late:
Submitting IRS statements after the due dates will result in the payment of fines, the amount of which will vary according to the length of the delay.
Reimbursement sand payments:
Another date to keep in mind is the IRS reimbursement deadline, which ends annually on July 31st (article 77 of the Portuguese IRS Code).
If you have to pay IRS, the deadline is August 31, 2020 (in case you have delivered the IRS within the deadline).
If you submit your IRS after the legal deadline, the payment date is extended until December 31, 2020.
